D&AD brief pt.2 - playing with light!

 Carrying on playing and drawing with light, I decided to take it outside to try. It was dark, but for some reason some of the photos came out a sort of sepia colour. For these ones my brother helped me and we just ran around the garden past the camera, producing an amazing streak of light, I was amazed by this result. I really like them.

 

 

                                      

Thinking more towards the brief though and youth, he tried drawing a circle of light above my head to represent a halo and although they didn't work too well, I actually really like the ghostly effect produced and think I could do something with it.

For these two I actually tried moving the camera on the tripod rather than the light itself, but it did not work as well. I was also worried about moving my camera so quick!

Here are the results of me developing the halo pictures further, I overlapped them onto a photo I took of a grave as I thought this was a good contrast to the halo. The last one is my favourite.

I now wanted to try writing letters out with the light, so I tried to write the name of the magazine, dazed and confused separately with all the letters. These are some of the successful letters. 

Next I wanted to add them over some of the photos I'd already produced, so I tried merging a variation of the different light photos.

I don't think this looks good!

However this one has something about it, but the writing looks too messy and photoshoped. 

I really like what I did here, wrapping the light around some reeds.. I'm not sure how it can link to the brief though!

I kept having more ideas using the light and it was a lot of fun so I tried out some more experiments, this time trying to draw symbols that represent youth, such as music and headphones.

I love the music symbol we managed to capture in this one.

This one works the best I think. Love the pink against dark blue. Only problem is you can see too much of the background, editing is needed!

The music symbols were quite hard to do but I think a few came out alright.

For some reason I thought I could be crying the music symbol, but it doesn't look very good!

Here is the edited headphones picture, I really like it but think it looks too teenagery and not sophisticated enough for the magazine.

EDITING EXTREME! looks cool though..

Finally I wanted to try bringing masks into it and see if I could somehow light them up, I also liked the idea of holding the light so produced a few more experiments...

Love this one, but again not really sure what to do with it or how it could relate.

These didn't work so well, time to move on I think...

Beneath the fog!

So pretty I decided to experiment with them and overlap a few, I got some interesting effects :)

D&AD brief pt.1

For the student D&AD briefs we had to pick at least two, so seeing as how at the time I'd sort of fallen out of love with drawing for a bit and in love with photography I chose the two briefs focused on that area. The first one being for Dazed and Confused magazine. I love this magazine and I thought the brief sounded really interesting. It asks you to come up with a portrait of contemporary youth. A photograph that represents the youth of today and show something that will still be relevant in a decade. This is quite a hard thing to do, but what they were asking of us really appealed to me. First I looked at the magazine itself and some of the front covers. I really liked these 3 the most as they just has something unique and arty about them aswell as being fashion related. (Plus I think I just liked the colours!)

After looking on their website and familiarizing myself with the magazine, I started experimenting!

I wanted to try out 'drawing with light' for this brief after I was told some of my photography using light was really good and I should try experimenting with this technique!

Not really knowing where to start I grabbed a torch and just played around drawing funny patterns and shapes in a darkened room. Here are the results (not very good!)

A lot of it was definitely trail and error, but there were a few out of those that I thought were interesting and could work as an image so I developed them further.. (not having anything specific in mind, just playing to see what comes out of it)

I experimented by adding other photos on top of them on photoshop and changed the layer filters so that they blend into one image. I love the first image of me holding the bottle because of the way I blend into the background.. a good starting point for this project! :)

 

These ones, I feel are also really good. I started cropping the light circles I'd made and multiplying them, for some reason I thought they would look good on tree branches! I chose some photos I'd taken of fog in my local park to edit them with because I found the the darkness of them works really well in contrast to the light.

Amelias magazine illustrations.

For the local project at uni I got in contact with Matt Bramford on Twitter who writes or an online magazine called Amelias. I saw that he tweeted asking if there were any illustrators out there who wanted to illustrate his couture review and I jumped at the chance as I love fashion illustration. He asked me to illustrate some of the outifits from the desginers Normal Hartnell and Hardy Amies. There was no specification as to how many so I did about 5, but only 4 I liked enough to send in.. here they are.

The first two are definitely my faves :)
